When it comes to digital satellite tv systems, you basically have two choices for which provider you would go with. Both Directv® and Dish Network offer digital systems for their satellite services. The deals that they offer are fairly similar but you might have a preference, depending on the type of tv programming that you prefer.
Satellite Television
Satellites are objects that orbit around other objects in space. The Satellites that they use for your tv system send signals directly to your tv dish. These satellites need to be in a special orbit. The amount of time that it takes for a satellite to make the complete orbit is dependent upon how far the satellite is from whatever it is orbiting. Our own moon is a good example. To use another example you can think about the space shuttle. It flies in what is called a low Earth orbit. The orbit of the space shuttle varies from somewhere under 200 miles to 350 miles over our Earth. A complete orbit around the Earth takes around an hour and a half. The moon takes longer to complete it's orbit of Earth because it is at a much further distance from Earth than is the case with the orbit of the space shuttle. The required orbit for tv satellites which send television signals to the Earth is located approximately right between the two extremes which we have described above.
Digital Satellite TV Providers
One thing to keep in mind is that all of the digital satellite systems that are sold in the United States have been designed for the reception of programming from a specific provider. As an example, you can't use Dish TV Systems in order to receive programming from Directv®. It is for this reason that it is a good idea to do a comparison so that you can get to know what the different systems offer so that you can get an idea about which of these digital systems would be best for you. Although the various digital satellite tv systems have much of the same programming, they do differ in price, packaging, and offer different types of specialty programming. As an example, Directv® generally offers a greater degree of sports programming and Dish Network has a larger number of ethnic and specialty channels. The main factors that should be considered when you compare satellite tv systems are which packages best suit your needs and tastes, the availability of local programming and offers for HDTV and DVR options. Both of these providers offer a free satellite dish to new subscribers. High Definition Satellite TV Systems
High Definition television has become very popular in the consumer electronics arena. HDTV allows for a greater degree of resolution as well as quality of picture when compared with standard definition and analog programming. To view HDTV channels, you would have to have a HDTV ready or compatible television and a HD satellite or off air receiver. You should keep in mind that merely a few of the programs that are available are actually broadcast in high definition. The satellite providers that you choose will give you a list of the channels which they make available in the high definition format. The remainder of the programming that they offer will be given in standard definition digital format. A few high definition digital satellite tv receivers can also decode off air HDTV signals, while some others can not. DVR Satellite TV System Systems
DVR stands for digital video recorder. These devices are also known as a personal video recorders. They allow you to be able to record tv programming directly onto a special hard drive so that you can see it at a later time. Each of the top two digital satellite tv providers (Dish Network and Directv®) now offer satellite receivers which have integrated DVR systems. Most satellite tv providers do charge a nominal service fee on a monthly basis for use of these services but sometimes the top providers offer some sort of deal on this. DVR systems can come in different sizes. Size is measured by how big the hard drive is that they use. If your DVR has a bigger hard drive then you will have a longer recording time. DVR hard drives can be upgraded at a later time. You should keep in mind, however, that it is usually much more cost effective to just buy a larger hard drive when you are placing the initial order. A majority of the DVR systems that are in use today use a touch more than 1GB for every hour of programming. This means that if you have a DVR with a 120GB drive, it will have just over 100 hours of recording time. Also keep in mind that most integrated satellite receivers are only capable of recording satellite signals and not off air signals. If you have the need to record other programming from different sources then you might want to buy a DVR system that is capable of recording off air, satellite or cable signals.
Digital Satellite TV vs. Cable Television
Digital Satellite TV Systems are just one of the many ways in which you can view a large variety of television programming. Obviously, your other alternative is to either get an antennae or subscribe to cable. Satellite tv systems are generally cheaper than cable. They also have more choices for programming. In some areas you can get your local channels by using satellite TV and you can also get your programming options in more than one room. This is one of the top reasons why some people previously opted for cable instead of digital satellite. Some of the other benefits of digital satellite tv systems include the fact that you can receive a more direct broadcast as opposed to a signal thath is repeatedly relayed. This should give you better reception. Also, satellite tv now uses all digital technology which will give you images that are infinately more clear. Some people wonder if they can get satellite tv systems due to their location. Actually, you are more likely to be unable to get cable than you are to be unable to get digital satellite tv. To get satellite tv reception, all you need is a clear view of the southern sky. So go ahead and get a free Dish Network system or the satellite tv services that are offered by Directv®. Either of these providers should present a better overall deal than cable television can offer.
